Colfax – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) advises motorists that westbound Interstate 80 will be subject to detour on Tuesday, April 17 from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for combined maintenance operations. The detour will begin at Highway 20 for commercial vehicles and at Rollins Lake Road for passenger vehicles.
The detours are as follows:
· Commercial vehicles – All commercial vehicles will be detoured at Highway 20. Vehicles will be directed west on Highway 20 to Highway 49 in Nevada City. The detour will continue south on Highway 49 to Bell Road in Auburn. Bell Road will return motorists to I-80 westbound.
· Passenger vehicles – All passenger vehicles will be detoured at Rollins Lake Road. Motorists will be directed west on Rollins Lake Road to Highway 174. The detour continues south on 174 to I-80 westbound.
This detour is necessary for Caltrans Maintenance crews to perform a variety of maintenance work on a narrow section of I-80 known as the “three-mile grade”. Detouring traffic during the combined maintenance operation is required to maintain the safety of motorist and Caltrans staff.
Roadside message boards will be used to post the latest information. Unexpected weather or events may prolong or cause the work to be rescheduled. Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol urge motorists to use caution when driving through the detour and to reduce their speeds on the detours. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Slow for the Cone Zone”.
