Caltrans project includes water-quality gizmos
Those traveling along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe recently might have noticed strange objects along the lake side of the road near Trout Creek.

Those objects, not often seen at the South Shore, are known as "curbs and gutters." They're being installed as part of Caltrans' Highway 50 project from Trout Creek to Ski Run Boulevard.

Another eye-catching piece of the project is a deep concrete vault in a fenced-off area in the 3300 block of Lake Tahoe Blvd. That is where a water-quality device known as a Delaware sand filter is being installed. It is one of two that are part of the Caltrans project; the other will be in front of the campground. Caltrans expects the second vault to be poured this month, and both completed by October, according to Caltrans spokeswoman Deanna Shoopman.
