Cycling is a popular sport around Lake Tahoe and since the Lake is nestled in the mountains, curvy roads are common. Both cyclists and motorists need to be careful when traveling along the highways always keeping a lookout for one another.
Caltrans understands that there are shoulders that need repair and there are projects underway and planned to begin next year to help the condition of some of these shoulders. Caltrans continues to sweep the shoulders on Highway 89 from Squaw Valley to Truckee in both directions to get rid of unwanted debris such as rocks, glass and litter. Next year, Caltrans will begin the road rehabilitation project that goes from Squaw Valley to West River Street. The entire street including the paved shoulders are a part of the rehabilitation. Due to the size of the project, it is anticipated that this project may require two construction seasons.
There are some stretches of highway that Caltrans is unable to provide paved shoulders wide enough for comfortable bicycling. In areas that have narrow shoulders, it is recommended that cyclists consider taking local streets or bike paths that are parallel to the highway. Cyclists can also ask the local agency to install signs to show recommended bike routes to take that would be safer than riding on the highway. If riding on highways with narrow shoulders is necessary, cyclists should wear bright colors to make themselves more visible to motorists.
